PART I.
VOCABULARY
ASCII: American Standard Code for Information Interchange. A file saved in ASCII is referred to as being saved in the "text" mode. ASCII, or text, files can be read by almost any computer or program in the world.
BROWSER: A program that organizes web sites. (Examples: Microsoft Internet Explorer; Netscape Navigator.)
DOMAIN: The portion of an Internet address that follows the @ symbol and identified the computer you are logging onto.
HTML: HyperText Markup Language. The program language used to create web pages.
HTML TAGS: Tags and close tags> are used to indicate certain elements or characteristics of HTML.
INTERNET: The Internet is a world-wide network that connects thousands of computers with each other using telephone lines.
MODEM: A piece of equipment that allows a computer to connect to a phone line for the purpose of dialing into the internet.
NOTEPAD: A simple text (ASCII) word processor found on Windows 95 and 98.
OFFLINE: The process of performing certain tasks, such as designing web pages, prior to logging onto the Internet.
PROVIDER: A company that has access to the WWW and will include your web page in their network.
REFRESH (F5): After saving a file in notepad, an edited document will be "refreshed" by pressing F5 in Explorer. This will display the latest changes made.
UPLOADING: Transferring an HTML document to a provider's computer.
URL: Uniform Resource Locators. A URL is a WWW address. It is a locator that enables people to access your sites and link to other WWW sites.

ESSAYS
1. Be prepared to give the history of the internet, beginning with its military role. What historical and economic factors influenced its early spread to business and consumer uses?
Describe how the internet affects you personally; the national economy; and global security.
2. Name and describe three different occupations specifically involving computers and the internet. Indicate advantages and disadvantages of each.
3. Describe in detail the current legal situation in which Microsoft finds itself
at this time regarding their browser. (Describe what a browser is and the role of importance it plays to internet use.)
4. Name three html web design "package" programs.
Describe two advantages of using one of these programs rather than "tagging" with the standard html programming language?
Describe two disadvantages.

standard html tags and including two gifs or jpgs

enlarged) and two hypertext links.
